Silicone tape application on e-commerce boxes allows one corrugated box to be used for the original shipment and, when necessary, for returning the product.
The box is manufactured with two silicone-covered adhesive strips and one tear tape. The first adhesive strip closes the original shipment, the tear tape allows the recipient to open the box, and the second adhesive strip reseals it for return shipping.
Each strip has a separate function:
This creates practical returnable e-commerce packaging without requiring the customer to find additional parcel tape or use another box.
In this application, “silicone tape” refers to a silicone-coated release liner covering a strip of pressure-sensitive hot melt adhesive. The liner protects the adhesive during box production, storage and transport.
When the liner is removed, the adhesive is exposed and the box flap can be pressed closed.
Because the hot melt adhesive is applied directly to porous corrugated cardboard, it can penetrate the surface pores and fibres. This can create stronger anchorage than double-sided tape, which bonds mainly to the outer surface of the cardboard.
Printed, coated, laminated or recycled cardboard should always be tested with the selected adhesive before production.
The combination of two self-seal closures and one easy-opening tear tape provides several practical benefits:
This system is particularly useful for online retailers handling products that are frequently exchanged or returned, such as clothing, footwear, accessories and consumer goods.
The flat, die-cut box blank is transported through the application area. A hot melt gluing system applies two separate strips of pressure-sensitive adhesive to the required closure areas.
Mistral silicone tape applicators then place and cut the silicone release liners over the two adhesive strips. A Speedy TT applicator applies the tear tape in the opening area between the two closures.
The completed blank can then continue to any required folding and gluing operations.
A complete system for producing resealable e-commerce boxes requires:
Depending on the box format and production method, the system can be configured with Ortigia, Ortigia MF, Babila FF or Babila CL. Ortigia is suitable for automatic tape application on large corrugated blanks, while Ortigia MF offers greater flexibility for smaller quantities or irregular formats. Babila configurations can be used when automatic feeding or inline folding and gluing are required.
Integration on another suitable converting machine or existing folder-gluer may also be possible, subject to technical assessment.
Why are two silicone tape strips used?
The first strip closes the box for the original delivery. The second remains protected until the recipient needs to reseal the box for a return.
Is silicone tape the adhesive?
No. Silicone tape is the removable release liner. The actual bond is created by pressure-sensitive hot melt adhesive applied directly to the cardboard.
Can the system be installed on an existing production line?
It may be possible to integrate the applicators and hot melt system into an existing line. The available space, box transport, controls and positions of the three strips must first be evaluated.
Send Macari Srl – Fidia your box sample or drawing, open blank dimensions, cardboard type, positions of the two closure strips and tear tape, required production volume and details of any existing machine. We can evaluate the most suitable configuration for your resealable e-commerce boxes.
